These structures are known as enantiomers. They have the same chemical formula and structure, but they are non-superimposable mirror images.
Think of your left hand and your right hand. You have the same number of fingers and thumbs, but they are slightly different in how they are arranged.
In the case of Modafinil, it contains an even mix of R-Modafinil and S-Armodafinil.
And when you examine the pharmacokinetics of each enantiomer, R-Modafinil is what gives Modafinil its brain-boosting effects [4]:
“However, more recent human studies suggest that R-(–)-modafinil is the more metabolically stable and longer-acting enantiomer…the R-enantiomer had approximately threefold-higher affinity for the [dopamine transporter] than the S-enantiomer in rat brain tissue”
